Scientific Context
Molecular classification and background.

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived from ACTH(4-10). It is devoid of hormonal activity but possesses potent neurotrophic effects. Semax rapidly elevates the expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the central nervous system and protects neurons from excitotoxicity.

Laboratory Applications
Experimental models and settings.

  • Ischemia Models: Used in rat models of focal cerebral ischemia to measure infarct volume reduction.
  • Neurotrophin Assays: Applied to measure time-dependent increases in BDNF and trkB receptor levels.
  • ADHD Models: Investigated in spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR) for effects on attention and impulsivity.
  • Oxidative Stress: Researched for antioxidant effects in brain homogenates.
